Your community park at the heart of Dublin, Texas.
At the center of Dublin, the Irish Capital of Texas, stands the Dublin Corner Lot. We are a small community park well equipped to please the senses of anyone passing by or choosing to stay a bit.
There’s a charming gazebo, wooden benches shaded by arbors of crossvines, a small pond complete with bubbling waterfall, lovely waterlilies, and a school of koi (fish). Shade trees with flowers and even bluebonnets in spring wildflower season! This park is our front porch to the community.
We call it the Corner Lot, but its official name is
Pretty Peggy Pepper Park.
This is the history of the Corner Lot.
In 1975, there was a fire that destroyed a local favorite eatery, Black’s Cafe, along with several other businesses located along Patrick Street. Year after year the absentee owner did nothing and Dublin citizens had finally had enough of the dismal state of the space.
1995 is the year the idea for this park was birthed. This plot of land in the center of town had remained barren, ugly, and neglected for over twenty years. Two women, owners of local businesses, planted a tiny garden on the very corner just to make the statement, “This is gonna change!”
Citizens rallied, plans were made, trucks hauled off debris, and hauled in Erath County fertilizer aka "cow poop." The newly formed Corner Lot Gang kept the project moving. Citizens and local businesses donated labor, supplies, ideas, plants, and equipment. It was truly a community effort! Locals provided entertainment on site for Tuesday Night Under the Stars to raise funds.
After an enormous city-wide garage sale under a big circus tent, the purchase price was still out of reach! That's when Billy Kloster, then the owner of Dublin Dr Pepper, came to the rescue. He donated $15,000 in exchange for the right to build a swinging Peggy Pepper sign on the Corner Lot. Billy had long dreamed of putting up that sign. Then he challenged a former DHS classmate, Gordon Hollon, to donate the final $5000 to complete the purchase price. Gordon eagerly agreed. In honor of Billy Kloster's generous donation and his dream, there's a plaque officially naming this spot Pretty Peggy Pepper Park.
We are dedicated to continuing a green and open space for any and all to enjoy.
This is your park!
Our park does not belong to the city or any business. It belongs to those who support our cause of a green space for all. Dublin’s citizens, businesses, and friends have been committed to our mission since 1996 in helping to maintain this park. Support through memberships, donations, and memorials keeps it flourishing.
Like any non-profit organization our funding comes completely from charitable donations to keep our park maintained and open to all. If you have a love of natural green spaces, keeping your community clean, and a passion for parks then consider making a donation today. We are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organziation and all charitable donations are completely tax deductible.
Can't make a donation? That's okay, we can still use your help by getting involved. We have "clean up" days, decoration events, general maintenance needs, and other areas where we could use an extra pair of hands to help. Get involved today in helping maintain the Corner Lot!
